Your Customers Are Asking AI. Is Your Business Answering?
Voice search and AI assistants are replacing Google for millions of searches daily. Most Aussie businesses aren't even in the conversation — here's how to fix that.

While you were busy chasing page-one rankings, your customers stopped typing altogether.
They're talking to Siri, asking ChatGPT, quizzing Perplexity, and letting Google's AI Overviews hand them answers before they even see a single website. And here's the brutal truth: if your business isn't specifically optimised to appear in those AI-generated responses, you don't exist — not in 2026, and not in the way that actually drives revenue.
I've spent 15 years watching Australian businesses chase the wrong metric at the wrong time. Right now, I'm watching it happen again. Businesses pouring money into traditional SEO campaigns while AI assistants quietly steal their customers in the background. The difference this time? The window to act is smaller than most people think.
The Shift Isn't Coming. It Already Happened.
Let's talk about what's actually going on. AI-powered search — what the industry is now calling Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) — isn't a trend you can afford to "wait and see" on. It's the current reality of how people find businesses.
Think about how a local search used to work. Someone types "best accountant in Parramatta" into Google, gets ten blue links, clicks around, compares websites, and eventually picks up the phone. That journey now looks radically different. They ask their phone, "Hey Siri, who's a good accountant near me?" or they type the same question into ChatGPT and get a confident, conversational answer that names specific businesses — or doesn't name yours.
Here's what that means in practice for Australian small businesses:
- Voice search queries are longer and more conversational — "Who's the best mortgage broker for first home buyers in Brisbane?" beats "mortgage broker Brisbane" every single time in AI-generated results.
- AI assistants pull from structured, authoritative content — not keyword-stuffed pages, but clear, well-organised information that directly answers real questions.
- Local context matters more than ever — AI systems are increasingly sophisticated about surfacing genuinely local, relevant businesses, which is a massive opportunity for small operators who get this right.
- Your competitors are mostly asleep on this — which means moving now gives you a genuine first-mover advantage in your market.
The businesses showing up in AI responses aren't there by accident. They've structured their content, their Google Business Profiles, their FAQ pages, and their online presence in ways that make it easy for AI systems to confidently cite them. That's the game now.
What "Optimising for AI" Actually Means for a Small Business
Here's where I want to be honest with you — because a lot of what's being sold under the banner of "AI optimisation" is either vague consulting waffle or repackaged SEO with a new coat of paint.
Real AEO and GEO for Australian businesses comes down to a few concrete things:
First, answer questions your customers are actually asking. Not the questions your marketing team thinks they're asking. Real questions, in natural language, answered clearly and completely on your website. Think of a dedicated FAQ section not as an afterthought but as your most important piece of content — because AI assistants love pulling from it.
Second, claim your authority clearly. AI systems are essentially making trust judgements about your business every time someone asks about your industry. That means consistent NAP (name, address, phone) data across every directory, a fully built-out Google Business Profile, genuine reviews, and third-party mentions that confirm you are who you say you are. When I was building SEOGOAT, one of the first things we focused on was helping businesses structure this kind of foundational credibility — because without it, nothing else works.
Third, write for humans first, machines second. The irony of AI search is that the content that performs best is the most genuinely useful content — not optimised-to-death keyword density. Conversational, clear, specific content written for a real person with a real problem. That's what gets cited. That's what gets read aloud by a voice assistant at 7am to someone driving to work.
Fourth, think local and think specific. For most Australian small businesses, the opportunity isn't to compete nationally — it's to absolutely own your suburb, your service category, your niche. AI assistants are getting better and better at hyperlocal answers, and a well-structured local business can absolutely punch above its weight here against bigger competitors who've ignored this shift.
A Word for the Agencies Reading This
I know you're here too, and I want to be straight with you: the traditional SEO agencies who are behind on this aren't villains. This industry moves fast, and most of the frameworks we all relied on for a decade were genuinely effective — until they weren't. That's not a moral failure, it's just the nature of a rapidly changing landscape.
But the agencies that will still be standing in two years are the ones willing to learn GEO and AEO properly, retrain their teams, and have honest conversations with clients about what "search visibility" actually means in 2026. The playbook has changed. The opportunity to lead clients through that change is real and significant — if you're willing to get ahead of it rather than defend the old model.
For business owners: ask your current agency what they're doing specifically to help you appear in AI-generated responses. If they look confused or start talking exclusively about Google rankings, that's important information. It doesn't mean fire them tomorrow — but it does mean you need to have a bigger conversation about where your marketing budget is actually going.
The Australian market is still early enough in this shift that businesses who move now will have a genuine advantage. The window won't stay open forever.
Here's your one action for tomorrow morning: Open ChatGPT or Perplexity, type in the question your best customer would ask to find a business like yours, and see who gets recommended. If it's not you — and it probably isn't yet — you've just identified the most important marketing gap in your business right now. Start there.
