Schema Markup Won't Save You From AI Search Obscurity

Everyone's arguing about structured data like it's 2019. Meanwhile, AI search engines are ignoring your perfectly tagged website entirely. Here's what actually matters now.

Your schema markup is immaculate. Your JSON-LD is flawless. ChatGPT has never heard of you.

I've sat across from enough Australian business owners in the last 18 months to know exactly how this conversation goes. They've just paid an agency good money to implement structured data across their entire site. Every product page tagged. Every review marked up. Every breadcrumb accounted for. And when they type their business category into ChatGPT or Perplexity, some competitor they've never worried about gets recommended instead. Not them.

So they ask me: "Does schema markup help with AI search?" And here's my honest answer — it's the wrong question entirely. And the fact that most SEO conversations are still centred on it tells you exactly how far behind the industry is.

The Debate Is Real, But It's Distracting You

Right now there's a genuine disagreement happening between smart people in the search industry. On one side, you've got researchers arguing that structured data is the critical "strategic data layer" businesses need to prioritise for AI visibility — that context, delivered through schema, is what helps AI engines understand who you are and what you do. On the other side, you've got equally credible voices saying what matters for AI visibility is relevant content and long-term brand building, not structured data at all.

Both sides have a point. Neither side is giving Australian small businesses and their marketers what they actually need.

Here's my take, and I'm not going to hedge it: schema markup is table stakes, not a strategy. It's the equivalent of making sure your shopfront has a sign with your business name on it. Yes, you should have it. No, it's not why customers walk through the door. Implementing schema and calling it an AI search strategy is like installing a smoke alarm and calling it a fire safety plan.

The new study doing the rounds right now — where AI search engineers actually identified the ranking signals that get businesses recommended in ChatGPT — barely features structured data as a primary driver. What does feature? Brand authority. Citation frequency across trusted sources. The depth and specificity of your expertise signals. Whether other credible voices on the internet are referencing your business as an answer to real questions.

That's a fundamentally different game. And most SEO agencies — through no malice, just momentum — are still running the old playbook.

What Australian Businesses Are Actually Up Against

The Australian market has a specific problem that makes this urgent. We're a relatively small market with high digital adoption, which means the window to establish AI search visibility before it consolidates around a handful of dominant brands is shorter here than almost anywhere else. Once ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews develop confident, habitual answers about who the best accountant in Brisbane is, or which Sydney removalist is most trusted — those answers will calcify. Changing an AI's established recommendation pattern is significantly harder than climbing a Google rankings page.

The businesses that move now on Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) — building the kind of authoritative, frequently-cited, genuinely useful content that AI engines draw from — are the ones who'll own the next decade of search visibility in this country. Not the ones who spent Q1 perfecting their FAQ schema.

I built SEOGOAT specifically because I kept watching good businesses get told to focus on technical minutiae while the actual opportunity walked right past them. The shift to AI search isn't a threat to businesses — it's a leveller. A well-positioned small business with genuine expertise and a smart content strategy can out-rank a big competitor in AI results in ways that were nearly impossible with traditional Google SEO.

So What Should You Actually Do With Schema?

Implement the basics — yes. LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Review, and Product schema are worth having, full stop. They help search systems understand your context and they cost you nothing significant to set up properly. If your agency hasn't done this, ask them to. If you're running WordPress, there are plugins that handle 80% of it in an afternoon.

But then stop there and redirect your energy. Because the AI visibility signals that actually move the needle are:

  • Being mentioned as an answer across multiple trusted third-party sources — industry publications, local news, credible directories, podcast transcripts, professional association websites.
  • Publishing content that directly and specifically answers the questions your customers type into AI tools — not keyword-optimised fluff, but genuinely useful, opinionated, expert responses.
  • Building a recognisable brand entity — your business name, founder name, and core expertise need to appear together consistently enough that AI engines develop a confident association.
  • Earning citations in contexts where AI tools are trained to look — think Reddit threads, Quora answers, detailed Google reviews, and niche community forums where real humans discuss real problems.

The businesses crying about AI search making SEO harder are the ones who were doing SEO wrong to begin with — chasing rankings instead of building reputation. The businesses genuinely excited right now are the ones who always knew that being the most trusted, most cited, most clearly expert voice in their niche was the goal. AI search just made that strategy pay off faster.

Structured data is a layer of good housekeeping. Answer Engine Optimisation is a growth strategy. Don't confuse the two.

Tomorrow morning, open ChatGPT or Perplexity and type the exact question your best customer asked you right before they hired you. See who comes up. If it's not you, that's your starting point — not your schema file.
