Perplexity Just Replaced Google for Your Next Customer
While you're chasing page-one rankings, your competitors are getting recommended by AI. Here's what's actually happening — and how to get ahead of it.
Anthony Pinto
Founder, SEOGOAT
Your next customer isn't typing into Google and scrolling through ten blue links. They're asking Perplexity, ChatGPT, or Gemini a question like "what's the best accountant in Brisbane for small business owners" — and they're trusting whatever name comes back first. No clicking around. No comparing. Just an answer. And right now, for most Australian businesses, that answer is someone else's name.
I've spent fifteen years watching businesses pour money into tactics that made sense at the time. Yellow Pages. Then Google Ads. Then content marketing. Then technical SEO. Each shift felt radical until it became obvious. This one's no different — except the window to get ahead of it is closing faster than any previous transition I've seen.
The businesses showing up in AI recommendations right now aren't necessarily the biggest or the best. They're the ones whose digital footprint is structured in a way that AI engines can actually read, trust, and cite. That's the whole game. And almost nobody in the Australian market is playing it yet.
What's Actually Changed (And Why Your SEO Agency Hasn't Told You)
To be fair to the SEO agencies — and I genuinely mean this — most of them aren't hiding anything. They're just working from a playbook that was written for a world where Google's ten blue links were the destination. That playbook still has value. Backlinks still matter. Site speed still matters. But optimising purely for Google rankings in 2026 is like spending your whole marketing budget on a billboard on a highway that's slowly being rerouted.
AI search engines like Perplexity don't rank websites the way Google does. They synthesise information. They look for sources they can trust, cite, and quote. They're looking for authority signals — consistent mentions across credible platforms, clear expert positioning, structured data that tells them exactly who you are and what you do. This is what's being called Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) or Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO), and it's a genuinely different discipline from traditional SEO.
A marketing strategist in the US recently made headlines because his agency is now recommended number one across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — not because he gamed an algorithm, but because he deliberately built a presence designed for AI discovery. Startups are already emerging specifically to help hotels, destinations, and local businesses monitor and improve their AI visibility. New agencies are launching services entirely built around this shift. This isn't fringe thinking anymore. It's happening, and Australia is behind.
The Opportunity Is Embarrassingly Wide Open Right Now
Here's the part nobody wants to say out loud: the GEO/AEO space in Australia is nearly uncontested. Most of your competitors are still arguing about whether AI search is a real thing. That means if you move in the next six to twelve months, you're not fighting for scraps — you're setting the table.
What does AI visibility actually require? A few things that aren't complicated, but do require intentionality. First, you need to be cited and mentioned on platforms that AI engines treat as credible — think industry publications, podcasts, interview features, PR placements, and high-authority directories. Second, your own website content needs to directly answer the questions your customers are actually asking AI tools right now. Not keyword-stuffed content. Genuinely useful, clear, structured answers. Third, your structured data — the technical markup that tells AI systems who you are, what you do, and where you operate — needs to be tight and consistent across every platform you exist on.
When I was building SEOGOAT, this is the problem I kept running into: business owners had no visibility into how they appeared in AI search results, let alone a system for improving it. Most of the GEO frameworks being talked about overseas are being built for enterprise. Australian small businesses need something practical, not a $50,000 consulting engagement.
The good news is that getting cited in AI results isn't reserved for big brands with massive budgets. A tradie in Parramatta with a well-structured Google Business Profile, a few solid editorial mentions, and FAQ content written for AI readability can absolutely show up when someone asks Perplexity for the best plumber in Western Sydney. The framework works at every level.
Stop Waiting for Your Agency to Tell You It's Time
If you're a business owner, here's the hard truth: your SEO agency will come to you with a GEO offering eventually. But by the time it's packaged up as a product and presented to you in a neat proposal, the businesses who moved early will already own the AI real estate in your category. You don't want to be the person who heard about this in 2026 and acted in 2028.
If you're an in-house marketer, this is your moment to lead. Bring GEO to the table before your CMO reads about it in a trade publication and asks why you didn't flag it. The frameworks aren't complicated — they just require someone to own them, and right now most marketing teams have nobody in that seat.
If you run a web or digital agency, the businesses sitting across from you in your next client meeting are about to start asking about AI visibility. You can either have a confident answer ready, or watch them find someone who does. The agencies building GEO capability into their service stack today are going to look very smart in twelve months.
The shift to AI-powered search isn't a threat to well-run businesses. It's a reset — and resets always favour the people who recognise them early. Every previous disruption in digital marketing handed an advantage to whoever moved before the crowd. This one's no different.
Tomorrow morning, open ChatGPT or Perplexity and type in the question your ideal customer would ask to find a business like yours. See whose name comes up. If it's not yours, you've just identified exactly what you need to fix — and you've got a head start on the 95% of Australian businesses that haven't even asked the question yet.
