Perplexity Just Became Your New Business Card
Half of consumers are already using AI search. If your business isn't showing up in Perplexity, ChatGPT, or Google AI Overviews, you're invisible to them. Full stop.

Founder, SEOGOAT
Here's something that should keep you up at night: there are 28,100 people searching for "hotels in London" on Perplexity every single month. Not Google. Perplexity. And right next to that stat is 47,300 TikTok searches for the same phrase. Meanwhile, the hotel industry is still arguing about meta descriptions and DA scores.
Now zoom out. If that's happening in hospitality — one of the most Google-dependent industries on the planet — what do you think is happening in your industry right now?
A new report found that 89% of enterprise marketers say AI-powered search improved their marketing performance in 2025. But here's the kicker: most of them still can't accurately measure it. They know something's working. They just don't know why or how to lean into it. That gap — between knowing AI search matters and actually knowing how to win at it — is the single biggest opportunity available to Australian businesses in 2026.
The $750 Billion Wake-Up Call
Let me put a number on this so it doesn't feel abstract. AI search is projected to influence $750 billion AUD in global revenue by 2028. Half of consumers are already using AI-powered search today. Not "starting to experiment with it." Using it. Regularly. To make purchasing decisions.
When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best accounting software for a small Australian business" or asks Perplexity "find me a reliable electrician in Brisbane," they're not getting a list of ten blue links. They're getting a confident, direct answer — and if your business isn't the one being cited, you don't exist in that moment.
This isn't a traffic problem. It's a visibility problem. And the businesses solving it right now are going to own their categories for the next decade.
Traditional SEO agencies aren't bad people — I want to be clear about that. Most of them are genuinely talented, hardworking operators who built real skills over many years. But the tools they're doubling down on were built for a world where Google was the front door to the internet. Semrush just launched an MCP connector inside Perplexity itself, integrating search intelligence directly into the AI engine. The platforms are merging. The game has changed. And advice that doesn't account for that isn't bad advice from a bad person — it's just outdated advice from someone who hasn't had time to catch up yet.
What AI Search Actually Rewards (And It's Not What You Think)
Here's where most marketing conversations go wrong. People hear "AI search" and immediately think: more content, more keywords, more optimisation tricks. That's the old reflex kicking in.
AI search engines like Perplexity and ChatGPT don't crawl the web the way Google does. They synthesise it. They're looking for sources they can trust and cite with confidence. That means the businesses winning in AI search aren't the ones with the most backlinks — they're the ones who have:
- Clear, direct answers to specific questions their customers are actually asking
- Consistent, authoritative information across their website, Google Business Profile, industry directories, and review platforms
- Content that demonstrates genuine expertise — not generic fluff written to hit a word count
- A digital footprint that gives AI engines enough signal to understand exactly what you do, who you serve, and why you're credible
This is what's called Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), and it's the discipline that separates businesses getting cited by AI from businesses getting ignored by it.
The good news for Australian small businesses? Most of your competitors haven't started yet. The local tradie, the boutique accountant, the regional law firm — they're all still waiting for their SEO agency to tell them what to do. Which means right now, in mid-2026, there is a genuine first-mover advantage available that won't last much longer.
What You Can Actually Do About It
I built SEOGOAT specifically because I kept seeing Australian businesses get excellent Google rankings and then scratch their heads wondering why the phone wasn't ringing the way it used to. The answer wasn't that SEO stopped working — it's that the search landscape fractured, and optimising for one platform is no longer enough.
Here's the framework I'd give any business owner or in-house marketer right now:
First, audit your answer footprint. Go to Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Overviews. Type in the questions your customers ask before they buy from someone like you. Does your business get mentioned? Does any competitor? What sources are being cited? This fifteen-minute exercise will tell you more about your AI search visibility than any SEO report.
Second, stop writing content for algorithms and start writing content for questions. The most powerful thing you can do right now is identify the ten most common questions your customers ask before making a decision — and answer each one with a direct, specific, genuinely helpful piece of content. Not a 2,000-word blog post that buries the answer in paragraph nine. A clear page that leads with the answer and backs it up with proof.
Third, treat your structured data and business listings like infrastructure, not an afterthought. AI engines rely heavily on consistent, verified information. Your NAP (name, address, phone) consistency, your Google Business Profile, your industry-specific directories — these are the trust signals that help AI engines cite you with confidence.
The shift from traditional search to AI search isn't coming. It's here. And the businesses I'm watching win right now aren't the ones with the biggest marketing budgets or the most aggressive SEO campaigns — they're the ones who understood early that the new game rewards clarity, authority, and genuine usefulness over technical tricks.
You don't need to abandon everything you've built. You just need to update the mental model. AI search isn't the death of digital marketing — it's the upgrade. And right now, in Australia, the door is wide open.
