Google SGE Isn't Coming. It's Already Here. Now What?

Australian businesses are still chasing page-one rankings while Google rewrites the rules in real time. Here's what's actually happening — and how to get ahead of it.

Your SEO agency is optimising for a search engine that no longer exists in the form they learned.

That's not a knock on them. It's just the reality. Google's Search Generative Experience — now called AI Overviews — has fundamentally changed what happens when someone types a question into Google. Instead of a list of blue links, they get an AI-generated answer sitting right at the top of the page. No click required. No visit to your website. No chance to convert them. Just... an answer. And then they move on.

A Business Insider analysis tracked Google's generative AI results over several months and the conclusion was uncomfortable for anyone selling traditional SEO: the business of online search is being upended. Not slowly. Not eventually. Now.

I've been building Australian businesses for over 15 years, and I'll be straight with you — this is the biggest structural shift I've seen since Google first knocked the Yellow Pages off its perch. The difference is, most businesses didn't notice that shift until years after it happened. You have a window right now to notice this one early.

What SGE Actually Does to Your Traffic (And Why Your Rankings Are Lying to You)

Here's the part nobody wants to say out loud: you can rank number one on Google and still get almost no clicks.

AI Overviews pull information from across the web, synthesise it into a tidy summary, and present it before a user ever sees your listing. Google describes the feature as taking "more of the legwork out of searching" — which sounds helpful until you realise your business was that legwork. You were the destination. Now you're the source material for an AI answer that doesn't send the reader your way.

For informational queries — "how does X work", "what's the best Y for Z" — the click-through rate drop is significant. Some studies are showing organic clicks down 30 to 60 per cent on AI Overview queries. And these aren't niche edge cases. This is the bread-and-butter traffic that Australian service businesses, e-commerce stores, and local operators have built their digital strategies around for the past decade.

What worries me most is that businesses are still measuring success by keyword rankings. That metric made sense in 2015. In 2026, a Page 1 ranking with zero clicks is just a vanity trophy.

The Australian Businesses Who Will Win Are Already Thinking Differently

Here's where I want to flip this, because I'm not interested in doom and gloom — I'm interested in what you can actually do.

The shift from traditional SEO to what's being called AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is a genuine competitive advantage for the businesses that move first. In Australia, we're slightly behind the US rollout, which means you have a short but real runway to get positioned before your competitors even understand the question.

AEO and GEO are about one thing: becoming the source that AI engines trust and cite. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview a question relevant to your business, you want your brand, your content, and your expertise showing up in that answer. Not as a link people might click. As the authority that trained the answer.

That means creating content that's structured for AI comprehension — direct answers, clear entity relationships, proper schema markup, and above all, demonstrating genuine expertise that machines can verify. It means building the kind of digital presence that AI engines read as credible: consistent mentions across reputable Australian publications, clear signals of who you are and what you do, and content that answers questions at a depth that a scraped paragraph cannot replicate.

It also means your website content strategy has to shift from "rank for this keyword" to "own this topic". There's a difference. Ranking is a position. Owning a topic means you are the reference point — the business that AI engines surface when that topic comes up, whether someone is searching on Google, asking ChatGPT, or using Perplexity to research their next purchase.

I built SEOGOAT specifically to help Australian businesses get ahead of this shift — because I kept watching good operators get sold outdated strategies while the ground moved beneath them. The tool isn't the point. The mindset shift is.

What This Means If You Run an Agency or Work In-House

If you're running a digital or SEO agency, I want to be direct without being harsh: your clients need you to understand this, and most agencies don't yet. That's not because anyone's being lazy — it's because the playbooks we all learned were genuinely excellent for the era they were written for. The era changed faster than the training manuals did.

The agencies that will still have strong client rosters in two years are the ones reworking their deliverables right now. Not rebranding. Reworking. There's a difference between slapping "AI SEO" on your service list and actually understanding how large language models index authority, how schema and structured data influence AI outputs, and how to measure success when click-through rates are no longer the primary metric.

For in-house marketers, this is your moment to look ahead of your leadership. Most Australian business owners are still asking "how do I rank higher on Google?" — a completely reasonable question that is slowly becoming the wrong question. If you can walk into that conversation with a clear, jargon-free explanation of AEO and a 90-day plan to build AI visibility, you become the most valuable person in the room.

The businesses that will win the next five years of Australian digital marketing are not the ones with the highest domain authority. They're the ones who become the answer — not just the link.

Tomorrow morning, open ChatGPT or Perplexity and type in the three questions your best customers ask before they buy from you. Look at what comes up. If your business isn't part of that answer, that's your starting point — and that's exactly what needs to change.
