Google Just Ate 58% of Your Traffic. Here's the Upside.

AI Overviews now swallow more than half your clicks before users ever reach your site. Most businesses are panicking. The smart ones are pivoting.

Google just stole 58% of your website traffic — and the industry is treating it like a weather event. Something that happened to us. Something we just have to survive.

I want to flip that framing completely.

New research from Ahrefs confirms what a lot of us have been watching build for eighteen months: Google's AI Overviews now cost websites 58% of their clicks on affected queries. Nearly half of all searches — 48% — now trigger one of these AI-generated answer panels that sits above everything else on the page. The user gets their answer. They leave. Your site never even enters the picture.

UK publishers are lawyering up. American media outlets are calling it existential. And most Australian small business owners are still asking their SEO agency why their traffic is down and getting told to "wait for the algorithm to settle."

It's not going to settle. This is the settled state. And that's actually good news — if you're willing to think differently about where the real opportunity now lives.

The Traffic Model Is Broken. The Visibility Model Isn't.

Here's the thing most traditional SEO thinking gets wrong right now: it treats website traffic as the goal. It isn't. Traffic is just a mechanism for visibility, and visibility is what actually drives enquiries, trust, and sales.

For years, those two things — traffic and visibility — were the same thing. You ranked, you got clicked, you got seen. Google AI Overviews have surgically separated them. You can now be highly visible inside an AI Overview without receiving a single click. The AI reads your content, synthesises your expertise, and presents it to the searcher — with your brand name attached, sometimes, or not at all.

That's a problem if you're measuring clicks. It's an opportunity if you're measuring something smarter.

Answer Engine Optimisation — AEO — is the practice of structuring your content so that AI systems cite you, quote you, and reference your business as an authoritative source. Not so that humans click through to read a 2,000-word blog post, but so that when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview a question in your category, your business name is the answer it gives.

Think about what that's worth for a moment. A plumber in Parramatta who gets cited by Google's AI Overview as the recommended local expert for hot water system replacements isn't losing traffic — they're getting a recommendation engine working for them around the clock, for free, without paying $3,500 a month in retainer fees.

That's not a consolation prize. That's a step-change in how local businesses can punch above their weight.

What Australian Businesses Need to Do Right Now

Let me be direct about something first: the agencies telling you to just keep building backlinks and optimising title tags aren't lying to you. They're working from a playbook that was winning the game as recently as 2023. They're not crooks. They're just behind the curve, and in 2026, behind the curve is expensive.

The businesses winning in AI search right now share three characteristics:

  • They write with specificity, not volume. AI systems don't reward publishing twelve blog posts a month. They reward content that answers a precise question completely. One genuinely useful, well-structured answer to a question your customers actually ask is worth more than a content calendar full of filler.
  • They structure information the way AI reads it. Clear headings. Direct answers near the top of the page. FAQ sections with real questions, not keyword-stuffed approximations of questions. Schema markup that tells AI systems exactly what your business does, where you operate, and who you serve.
  • They build entity authority, not just keyword authority. AI systems are trying to understand who you are as a business — your reputation, your consistency, your relevance to a topic. That means your Google Business Profile, your mentions across trusted local directories, your LinkedIn presence, and your reviews all matter in ways that pure backlink counts never captured.

I built SEOGOAT specifically because I watched Australian businesses getting charged serious money for strategies that were already becoming obsolete. The gap between what traditional SEO delivers and what AEO and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) can deliver for a local business in 2026 is not small. It's the difference between fighting for clicks that AI is actively intercepting versus positioning yourself as the source AI draws from in the first place.

The web isn't dying — that's the catastrophising version of this story. What's dying is the assumption that a high Google ranking automatically converts to traffic, and that traffic automatically converts to trust. AI search is compressing those steps. The businesses that understand this will find themselves in front of qualified customers faster and cheaper than ever before. The businesses that don't will keep wondering why their traffic reports look worse every quarter while their SEO invoice stays exactly the same.

The Bigger Picture Worth Understanding

There's a legitimate debate happening globally about whether AI search is sustainable without compensating the publishers it draws from. UK media companies just won a partial ruling giving them tools to block Google from using their content in AI summaries. Some American outlets are exploring similar legal paths. The underlying tension — AI systems need quality content to exist, but they're undermining the business model that creates quality content — is real and unresolved.

For Australian small businesses, this debate is mostly background noise right now. What matters is the next twelve months, and in the next twelve months, AI Overviews are not going away. They are expanding. Google's own internal metrics show user satisfaction with AI answers is high. They have every commercial incentive to double down.

So the question isn't whether to adapt. It's how fast.

The 58% click loss number sounds brutal — and for businesses built entirely on organic traffic arbitrage, it genuinely is. But for a tradie, a consultant, a local retailer, or a service business trying to be found by people in their city who need exactly what they offer? Being cited inside an AI Overview is arguably more powerful than ranking number two on a page most users never scroll past the AI panel to see.

This is not doom. This is a redistribution of leverage — and for the first time in a long time, the leverage is moving toward businesses willing to be genuinely useful and genuinely clear about what they do.

Tomorrow morning, open Google and search the three questions your best customers ask before they hire someone like you. Look at whether an AI Overview appears. Read what it says. Then ask yourself: is my business in that answer? If not — that's exactly where your energy needs to go.
