E-E-A-T Is Dead. Long Live Entity Authority.
Google's own quality framework has been hijacked by AI. Here's what actually builds trust with the search engines running the show in 2026.

Founder, SEOGOAT
If your SEO agency is still talking about E-E-A-T like it's 2023, they're tuning a carburettor on an electric car. The framework isn't wrong — it's just been absorbed into something far bigger, and most Australian businesses have no idea the game has already changed underneath them.
Let me be straight with you: E-E-A-T — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness — was Google's attempt to describe what good content looks like to a human quality rater. Useful framing. Solid foundation. But in 2026, the entities doing the evaluating aren't humans anymore. They're large language models, AI Overviews, and answer engines like Perplexity and ChatGPT. And those systems don't read your author bio. They read your entity mass.
Here's what that means in plain language: an AI search engine doesn't tick a checklist when it decides whether to cite your business. It asks a different question entirely — "How much does the web already agree that this entity knows what it's talking about?" That's not a content quality score. That's a reputation signal measured across thousands of data points: citations, mentions, structured data, consistent NAP details, first-party signals, and how extractable your actual knowledge is when an LLM pulls it apart sentence by sentence.
The May 2026 Update Wasn't a Tweak — It Was a Confession
Google's May 2026 algorithm update confirmed what a lot of us in the industry had been watching build for eighteen months. The ranking signals that dominated for a decade — backlink volume, keyword density, on-page optimisation tricks — got significantly devalued. What replaced them? Authority signals that AI systems can verify independently. Freshness of information. First-party data that proves you have real customers and real expertise. And entity clarity — meaning Google and every AI on top of it needs to know, without ambiguity, exactly who you are and what you stand for.
This isn't doom and gloom. For Australian businesses, this is actually the opportunity of a decade. Here's why: most of your competitors are still paying agencies to chase rankings that are evaporating. While they're doing that, you can be building the kind of entity authority that gets your business cited by AI search engines — not just ranked, cited. There's a difference, and it matters enormously.
When someone in Sydney types "best mortgage broker for self-employed buyers" into ChatGPT or gets an AI Overview in Google, they're not seeing a list of ten blue links anymore. They're getting an answer. That answer came from somewhere. The business that gets cited in that answer wins the customer — often without the user ever clicking anywhere else. Traditional SEO can't get you into that answer. Entity authority can.
What Actually Builds Authority With AI Search in 2026
Stop optimising for rankings. Start optimising for citations. The signals that matter now fall into three buckets:
- Entity clarity: Your business name, location, industry, and expertise need to be structured and consistent across every platform — your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories, press mentions. AI systems build a model of who you are from all of these combined. Contradictions and gaps reduce your entity mass. Consistency and depth build it.
- Extractable expertise: This is the one most businesses get completely wrong. It's not enough to have expertise — your content needs to be written so an LLM can pull out a clean, citable answer. That means specific claims, named methodologies, original data, and clear structure. Fluffy 2,000-word blog posts written to hit keyword targets do nothing here. A tight 600-word piece that answers one question with genuine depth and specificity? That gets cited.
- Third-party corroboration: AI search engines trust what the rest of the web agrees on. That means PR coverage, podcast appearances, industry association membership, customer reviews that mention specific outcomes, and yes — quality backlinks from relevant Australian sources. But the goal has shifted from "links for ranking" to "mentions that build consensus around your expertise."
I built SEOGOAT specifically because I kept watching great Australian businesses pour money into traditional SEO while the landscape shifted beneath them. The businesses winning in AI search right now aren't the ones with the most optimised meta descriptions. They're the ones who spent the last year making themselves genuinely, verifiably, structurally known.
What This Means for Agencies — and Their Clients
I want to be fair here, because I know a lot of good people running SEO agencies across Australia. They're not crooks. They learned a system, built processes around it, and got real results for their clients for years. The problem is the system changed faster than most agencies have been willing to admit — partly because admitting it means rebuilding everything they sell.
If you're a business owner reading this, don't fire your agency tomorrow. Ask them one question instead: "What are you doing to get us cited in AI search answers, not just ranked in Google?" Their answer will tell you everything. If they pivot immediately to talking about AI Overviews and entity optimisation, you've got a forward-thinking partner. If they look at you blankly or start explaining why traditional SEO still works — take that as your signal.
For in-house marketers, this is your moment to lead. The businesses that figure out Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) in the next twelve months will have a structural advantage that's very hard to close. AI systems are forming opinions about which businesses are authoritative right now. Once those models are trained and those citations are established, it gets significantly harder to break in.
The Australian market is still early enough that moving now puts you ahead of the curve, not chasing it. E-E-A-T was a useful map for a territory that has since been completely redrawn. The new map runs on entity mass, citation authority, and extractable expertise. Learn that language and you won't just rank — you'll be the answer.
Tomorrow morning, do this one thing: Search for the service you sell in ChatGPT and in Google with AI Overviews enabled. Read every answer carefully. Ask yourself: whose expertise is being cited, and why isn't it yours? That gap is exactly where your energy needs to go.
