Brand Mentions Are the New Backlinks. Act Now.

If your brand isn't being mentioned in AI search results, you don't exist to a growing chunk of your market. Here's what actually moves the needle in 2026.

Here's something your SEO agency almost certainly hasn't told you yet: Google rankings are no longer the finish line. They're not even the race. The race is happening inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews — and the businesses winning there aren't winning because of backlinks. They're winning because people are talking about them.

Brand mentions are the new backlinks. And if you're an Australian business still measuring success by where you sit on page one of Google, you're optimising for a scoreboard that fewer people are looking at every single month.

I'm not here to scare you. I'm here to tell you the door is still wide open — but not for long.

Why AI Search Engines Care About What People Say About You

When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best accounting software for small businesses in Melbourne" or "which Sydney mortgage broker should I use", the AI doesn't crawl the web in real time and rank ten blue links. It draws on a vast pool of training data and live retrieval — and it surfaces brands that have been consistently mentioned, cited, and discussed across the internet in credible contexts.

Think about what that means. A brand with 40 genuine mentions across industry publications, Reddit threads, podcast transcripts, review platforms, and news sites will outrank a brand with a technically perfect website and 200 backlinks — because the AI has more signal that the first brand is real, trusted, and relevant.

This is what the industry is calling AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation). The terminology is new. The underlying idea is dead simple: be the brand that the internet talks about, and AI search engines will talk about you too.

Agencies overseas are already building entire service lines around this. There are now dedicated tools specifically built to track whether your brand is appearing inside AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. I built SEOGOAT partly because I could see this shift coming and wanted a way to track it properly for Australian clients. The monitoring technology is here. What most Australian businesses are missing is the strategy to actually generate those mentions in the first place.

What "Getting Mentioned" Actually Looks Like in Practice

I want to be really concrete here, because this is where most articles go vague on you.

Getting your brand mentioned in ways that AI search engines pick up is not about gaming anything. It's about becoming genuinely, verifiably present across the digital ecosystem. Here's what that looks like in the Australian market right now:

  • Industry media and trade publications: A mention in SmartCompany, Inside Retail, or a relevant industry trade site carries enormous weight. One well-placed article or quote does more for your AI visibility than six months of meta tag tweaking.
  • Podcast appearances: Podcast transcripts are a goldmine for AI training data. Getting on three or four relevant Australian business podcasts this year is a legitimate AEO strategy.
  • Community forums and Reddit: Honest mentions of your brand in r/AusFinance, r/AusSmallBusiness, or industry-specific forums are exactly the kind of unstructured, authentic signal that AI models trust.
  • Review platforms with substance: Not just star ratings. Detailed, specific reviews on Google, Trustpilot, or Clutch that mention what your business actually does and who it helped.
  • Expert quotes in news coverage: Journalists are always looking for Australian business voices. Being a go-to source for comment in your niche creates the kind of authoritative mention that AI models weight heavily.

Notice what's not on that list? Keyword-stuffed blog posts. Exact-match anchor text. Link exchanges. These aren't necessarily harmful, but they're not moving the needle on AI visibility. The game has changed, and the currency has changed with it.

For multi-location businesses — think franchises, regional service providers, national retailers — this matters even more. AI assistants are increasingly the first stop for location-specific queries. "Best plumber in Parramatta" or "accounting firm near Geelong" are being answered by AI before the user ever sees a map pack. If your brand doesn't have location-specific mentions and coverage in those areas, you're invisible to that query.

The Gap Is an Opportunity — But Only Right Now

I want to be honest about something: most Australian SEO agencies are not bad at their jobs. They're just working from a playbook that was written before 2023. The consultants, the tools, the reporting dashboards — they were all built for a Google-centric world. That world still exists, but it's shrinking as a share of total search behaviour, and it will keep shrinking.

The agencies that are adapting — the ones adding AI visibility tracking, brand mention audits, and GEO strategy to their offerings — are doing the right thing. But they're still the minority. Which means right now, in mid-2026, there is a genuine first-mover advantage sitting on the table for Australian businesses willing to take brand mention strategy seriously.

Your competitors are almost certainly not thinking about this yet. Their agency is probably still reporting on keyword rankings and domain authority. That's your window.

The businesses that start building their brand mention footprint now — through PR, through community, through expert positioning, through consistent digital presence in the right places — are the ones that AI search engines will surface confidently twelve months from now. The businesses that wait will spend 2027 wondering why a competitor with a worse website keeps showing up in AI answers instead of them.

This isn't doom. This is one of the clearest competitive advantages I've seen in 15 years of building Australian businesses. The barrier to entry is lower than traditional SEO ever was, because it rewards genuine reputation over technical tricks.

But you do have to start.

Your one action for tomorrow morning: Open ChatGPT and Perplexity, and search for the top three questions your ideal customer would ask when looking for a business like yours. See which brands come up. If you're not one of them, that's your gap analysis done. Screenshot those results, send them to your marketing team or agency, and ask them specifically: "What's our plan to be mentioned in these answers by the end of the year?" Their response will tell you everything you need to know about whether they're ready for what comes next.
