AEO Is Not SEO With a New Name. Stop Treating It Like It Is.
Every agency is slapping 'AEO' on their service page and calling it a rebrand. It isn't. Answer Engine Optimisation is a completely different game — and most businesses are still playing the wrong one.

Here's something that should make you uncomfortable: right now, thousands of potential customers are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews which businesses they should trust — and the answer they're getting has absolutely nothing to do with your Google ranking.
Your position on page one? Irrelevant to that conversation. Your domain authority? Not a factor. The $3,000 a month you've been paying for traditional SEO? It's not buying you a single word in those AI-generated answers.
I've spent the last year watching the Australian market respond to this shift, and I'll be honest with you — the range is wild. Some businesses are moving fast, restructuring their entire content strategy around how AI engines source and cite information. Others are still debating whether to add a blog. And a growing number of agencies are doing something that genuinely frustrates me: they're taking their old SEO playbook, writing 'AEO' on the cover, and selling it as something new.
It isn't. And if you can't tell the difference, 2026 is going to be an expensive year of lessons.
What AEO Actually Is — And Why It Changes Everything
Answer Engine Optimisation is the practice of making your business the source that AI systems pull from when someone asks a question in your category. Not a link they might click. Not a result they scroll past. The actual answer delivered directly to the person asking.
Think about what that means in practice. When a tradie in Brisbane asks ChatGPT "what's the best waterproofing company in South East Queensland," or a small business owner asks Perplexity "which accountant do other founders recommend for an Australian startup" — the AI doesn't serve up ten blue links. It gives a name. Maybe two or three. And then it stops.
That's the whole ballgame. Either you're in that answer or you're not.
Traditional SEO optimised for algorithms that ranked documents. AEO optimises for AI systems that synthesise trust signals — things like how consistently you're cited across authoritative sources, how clearly your content answers specific questions, how your real customers describe you in reviews and case studies, and whether your expertise comes through as genuine and specific rather than generic and keyword-stuffed.
A new guide from QBiz Leads AI comparing AEO and SEO investment for 2026 makes the point plainly: lead-driven businesses need to fundamentally rethink where their budget goes. Because the two strategies aren't just different in execution — they're competing for different outcomes. SEO gets you found in a list. AEO gets you chosen in a conversation.
That distinction is worth sitting with for a moment.
The Agency Problem Nobody Wants to Say Out Loud
I want to be careful here, because I don't think most SEO agencies are doing the wrong thing out of cynicism. The ones I know personally are genuinely talented people who built real skills over many years. They're not crooks. They're just caught between an industry that's moved and a client base that hasn't fully understood what's changed yet.
Ranktracker just named Fuel Online the best SEO agency of 2026, and the same research placed them second in AEO and GEO capability. That's interesting data — not because of the rankings themselves, but because of what it tells us. Even the best traditional SEO agencies are still playing catch-up on the answer engine side. The gap between where agencies are and where the actual opportunity lives is significant.
If your current agency is talking to you about backlink profiles and keyword density in 2026, they're not lying to you. They're just describing a map of a city that's been rebuilt. The streets have different names now.
What you actually need from an agency in 2026 is someone who can answer these questions clearly: Which AI platforms is my target customer using to find businesses like mine? What questions are they asking? What sources do those AI systems currently cite for my category? And how do we systematically get our business into those sources?
If you ask those questions and get a blank stare or a pivot back to Google rankings, you have your answer about where that agency's thinking is at.
Your Customers Are Already Your Best AEO Asset
Here's the part that most of the 2026 AEO guides aren't saying loudly enough: your existing customers are the most powerful AEO lever you have, and almost nobody is using them properly.
AI answer engines are synthesising trust from the open web. They're reading your Google reviews, your case studies, your testimonials, the forums where people mention you, the LinkedIn posts where clients tag you. When they see consistent, specific, credible signals from real people saying you solved a real problem — that's citation-worthy content. That's what gets pulled into an answer.
The businesses showing up in AI answers right now aren't necessarily the biggest or the oldest. They're the ones with the clearest proof. Specific results. Named customers. Real outcomes described in plain language. One well-written case study from a happy client — where they explain the problem they had, what you did, and what changed — is worth more to your AEO strategy than fifty generic blog posts written around a keyword cluster.
I built SEOGOAT partly to help Australian businesses understand which signals matter for AI visibility, and the pattern is consistent: specificity wins. Vague authority doesn't. An AI engine can't cite "we're passionate about helping businesses grow." It can cite "Melbourne-based retailer increased online revenue by 40% after restructuring their product descriptions."
The businesses winning in AI search right now are the ones who've made it easy for AI to understand exactly who they help, what problem they solve, and why real customers chose them. That's not a technical SEO task. It's a clarity task. And it starts with your customers.
The opportunity here for Australian small businesses is genuinely significant. We're still early enough that being one of the first in your category to take AEO seriously means you're not fighting for position — you're defining it. That window won't stay open forever.
Tomorrow morning: pick one customer result you're genuinely proud of, call or email that client, get them to describe the outcome in their own words, and turn it into a specific case study you publish this week. That single piece of real-world proof will do more for your AI search visibility in 2026 than anything else on your to-do list.
