90% of Brands Are Invisible to AI Search. Are You One of Them?

A new study found 90% of brands have zero mentions in AI search results. That's not a wake-up call — that's a wide-open door if you move now.

Your competitor is ranking on Google. Congratulations to them. Meanwhile, ChatGPT just answered 40,000 questions in your industry this week and didn't mention either of you once.

That's the reality in 2026. A study that's been doing the rounds recently found that 90% of brands have zero visibility in AI search results. Zero. Not low. Not average. Not even a footnote. And before you think "that's probably the small guys" — no, it includes established businesses with decent Google rankings, solid backlink profiles, and agencies billing them monthly to maintain it all.

Here's what makes this genuinely exciting rather than terrifying: if 90% of brands aren't showing up, that means the race hasn't been run yet. The starting gun just fired. And most of your competition is still tying their shoelaces arguing about meta descriptions.

Why Your Backlinks Don't Mean What They Used to

Let me be straight with you — backlinks aren't dead. But they are no longer the whole game, and any agency still selling you purely on link-building in 2026 hasn't updated their playbook.

AI search platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews don't crawl the web and count links like a 2012 algorithm. They're building a picture of your brand based on entity signals — who you are, what you're known for, where your name appears in context, and whether the internet as a whole seems to trust you as a credible source on a specific topic.

This is where unlinked brand mentions become critical. A journalist quotes your founder in an article without linking to your site. A Reddit thread recommends your service by name. A podcast transcript mentions your business in passing. Under old SEO logic, those signals were basically invisible. Under AI search logic, they're building your authority profile whether you're managing them or not.

Here's the kicker though: a separate study found that 62% of AI citations don't even lead to a brand mention. So the AI might be pulling from your content, learning from your expertise, and using your ideas to answer questions — but crediting someone else. That's not a bug. That's what happens when you haven't deliberately built your brand presence into the AI's understanding of your industry.

For Australian businesses, this gap is enormous and largely unacknowledged. Most of the conversation about AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is happening in US and UK marketing circles. Local agencies here are still pitching DA scores and monthly ranking reports. That means if you start building AI visibility now, you're not catching up — you're lapping the field.

What AI Search Actually Rewards (And How to Get It)

So what does it take to show up when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity to recommend a bookkeeper in Brisbane, a plumber in Perth, or a marketing consultant in Melbourne?

It comes down to three things that work together:

  • Consistent, specific expertise signals. You need to be clearly and repeatedly associated with a defined topic or problem. Not "marketing" — email marketing for Shopify stores under $2M revenue. Not "accounting" — tax strategy for tradies and sole traders in Australia. The more precisely AI systems can categorise what you know, the more confidently they'll surface you when that question gets asked.
  • Brand mentions across independent sources. This is where the old PR playbook gets a new lease on life. Getting your business mentioned — even without a link — in industry publications, local news, podcasts, forums, and directories builds what I'd call your entity footprint. The AI needs to see your name appearing in credible contexts, not just on your own website.
  • Content structured for direct answers, not just keywords. AI search engines are looking for content that directly, confidently answers specific questions. Not content stuffed with phrases hoping to rank — content that acts like the smartest answer in the room. FAQ formats, clear definitions, opinionated how-to content, and original data all signal to AI that your site is worth quoting.

I built SEOGOAT specifically because I kept watching Australian businesses optimise for a version of search that was already changing underneath them. Tracking your brand mentions across AI platforms is now as important as tracking your Google ranking — arguably more so, because it's still early enough that the effort pays off disproportionately.

The businesses I'm seeing win right now aren't the ones with the biggest budgets or the longest history. They're the ones who understood early that being known is different from being ranked, and started treating their brand presence in AI systems as a deliberate strategy rather than a side effect of Google SEO.

What This Means If You Run an Agency

I want to say something here that might be uncomfortable: most SEO agencies in Australia are not ripping anyone off. They are genuinely skilled at what they do. The problem is that what they do is increasingly a smaller slice of what actually drives visibility and leads in 2026.

If you're running an agency, you're not a crook for still reporting on keyword rankings. But your clients are going to start asking why their Google traffic is flat or declining while their competitors seem to be getting recommended by AI tools they've never even thought to optimise for. You need an answer before that question comes in the door.

The opportunity is real. AEO and GEO services are genuinely underprovided in the Australian market right now. There are businesses that would happily pay for someone to help them become the brand that ChatGPT recommends in their niche — they just don't know to ask for it yet. You can be the agency that introduces them to that idea, or you can be the agency that gets replaced by one that does.

The 90% of brands that have zero AI visibility right now aren't lost causes. They're opportunities waiting for whoever shows up first with the right strategy.

The brands that win the next five years won't necessarily be the ones who ranked on page one in 2022. They'll be the ones who understood the shift early enough to build their presence where attention is actually going.

Tomorrow morning, do this one thing: Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and type "Who are the best [your service] providers in [your city or industry]?" If your business isn't in the answer, you now know exactly what problem you're solving — and you're already ahead of 90% of the market just by knowing it needs solving.
