12% of Aussies Ditched Google. Is Your Business Invisible to Them?

One in eight Australians now searches with ChatGPT instead of Google. If your entire digital strategy is built around rankings, you've already lost those customers.

Here's a number that should make every Australian business owner put down their coffee: 12% of Australians now use ChatGPT as their primary search tool instead of Google. That's not a rounding error. That's not a tech-nerd fringe group. That's Telsyte and Roy Morgan data, and it represents millions of real people looking for real products and services — people who will never see your Google ranking, no matter how much you've spent getting it there.

And that 12% is just the early movers. ChatGPT is processing around 2.5 billion prompts per day globally. Perplexity is growing faster than anyone predicted. Google's own AI Overviews are now answering questions before users ever scroll to a link. The direction of travel is not ambiguous. The only question is whether your business shows up in the answers these AI systems generate — or whether you've effectively gone dark for an entire generation of searchers.

I built SEOGOAT because I watched too many good Australian businesses pour money into SEO strategies that were already past their use-by date. What I'm seeing now is the same pattern, just faster and with higher stakes. The businesses getting strangled by AI search aren't bad businesses. They're businesses that kept doing what worked in 2019, in a world that moved on without them.

The Problem Isn't Google. It's That You Only Planned for Google.

Let me be clear about something: Google isn't dead. It's still processing billions of searches. But the nature of those searches has changed dramatically, and even within Google, the game has shifted. AI Overviews now sit at the top of results pages and synthesise answers from multiple sources. For a huge category of commercial queries — "best tradie near me", "what accounting software should I use", "how do I find a good mortgage broker in Brisbane" — users are getting a packaged answer, not a list of blue links to click through.

If your business isn't being cited in those AI-generated answers, you're invisible. Full stop. And the brutal reality, as one recent investigation into content-reliant businesses found, is that traditional content marketing built purely for Google rankings is actively being replaced by AI-generated summaries that don't send traffic anywhere. You can rank number one and still get zero visitors.

Traditional SEO agencies aren't the villains here — I want to be fair about that. Most of them are genuinely trying to help their clients. But the frameworks they're working from were designed for a world where search meant "user types query, user clicks link, user visits website." That linear journey is breaking down fast, and an industry built on optimising for it hasn't fully caught up yet.

The Opportunity Is Real, and Most of Your Competitors Are Asleep at the Wheel

Here's where I want to flip the conversation entirely, because this isn't a doom story — it's actually one of the biggest levelling opportunities Australian small businesses have seen in a decade.

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) are the disciplines that determine whether your business gets mentioned when an AI system answers a relevant question. And right now, almost nobody in the Australian market is doing this intentionally. Your competitors are still arguing about meta descriptions while the entire game has moved to a different stadium.

AI search engines reward businesses that are clear, authoritative, and genuinely useful. They pull from sources that answer questions directly, that demonstrate expertise, that are cited and referenced across the web, and that structure information in ways machines can understand and trust. This is not the same as stuffing keywords into a blog post. It's a fundamentally different mindset — one that actually rewards businesses for being good at what they do and being able to articulate it clearly.

Think about what's happening in the broader economy right now. Trades are booming because AI can't swing a hammer. Design tools like Claude's new design capabilities are reshaping creative industries. The businesses that are winning in this environment aren't the ones fighting AI — they're the ones positioning themselves as the trusted, human-expert source that AI systems point people toward. That's the play. That's the opportunity.

For Australian businesses — whether you're a Melbourne accountant, a Sydney e-commerce brand, or a tradie operation scaling across Queensland — the window to get ahead of this is open right now. In twelve months, it won't be. The businesses that establish themselves as authoritative sources in AI search results today will have a compounding advantage that's genuinely hard to displace. The ones still obsessing over their Google ranking in 2027 will be wondering where all their customers went.

What AEO Actually Looks Like in Practice

I'm not going to leave you with a vague directive to "optimise for AI." Here's what the shift actually requires:

  • Answer real questions, completely. AI systems love sources that provide a full, direct answer to a specific question. Not "learn more in our blog" — the actual answer, on the page, in plain language.
  • Build your entity presence. AI search tools cross-reference what's said about you across the web. Your Google Business Profile, industry directories, media mentions, and structured data all contribute to whether an AI system trusts you enough to cite you.
  • Get cited, not just ranked. Backlinks still matter, but for a different reason — they signal to AI that real humans and real organisations have vouched for you. Pursue genuine mentions in publications, podcasts, and industry resources your customers actually consume.
  • Structure your content for comprehension, not for crawlers. Use clear headings, direct answers, and plain language. If a Year 10 student can't understand what you do and why you're good at it, an AI engine will find someone clearer.
  • Stop treating your website as a brochure. It needs to be a genuine resource that demonstrates expertise — the kind of depth that makes an AI system confident recommending you over a competitor.

The 12% of Australians who've already moved their search behaviour to ChatGPT aren't going back. The percentage will be 20, then 30, then higher. Every industry, every category, every price point. The businesses that understand this now and act on it are going to look very smart in three years.

The ones still chasing last year's Google algorithm update are going to look like the guy who spent 2007 perfecting his Yellow Pages ad.

Tomorrow morning, do this one thing: Open ChatGPT and search for the main problem your best customers come to you to solve. See what comes up. See who gets mentioned. If it's not you — that's your starting point, and fixing it is entirely within your reach.
